Today’s post is an accumulation of thoughts, intuitive downloads, and meditative realizations over the past few weeks. Bear with me because it will be a bit of a doozy, but I think the message will be worth it in the end.
A few weeks ago, I talked to my triplet about God’s voice and unique ability to convey a message to you. If you go back a few blog posts, I spoke on God wanting us to be in reciprocal communication with him rather than just one way communication (i.e. prayer). When we talked, I joked to her, “God is the God of all things. Why do we assume his response is going to come in English, just because that’s the language we speak?”
Before I get to my examples, consider this: what if you have already gotten your answer but missed it because it didn’t come how you thought it would? We often think God hasn’t responded to our requests or inquiries. We don’t realize that He speaks the language of the universe, meaning sometimes we have to interpret his answers outside of our physical self and more with our spiritual self. Remember, we are spiritual beings having a human experience!
Okay, so the day’s topic is that God can use anything to convey his message to you. We often think that the response would just pop up in our heads like Bruce Almighty, and sometimes that is the case. But more often than not, God will use the mundane, everyday parts of our lives to give us the message. I’ve been sharing with y’all some of my trials and hardships lately, but now I want to share some of the messages that have been revealed to me over the past few months.
1. A Discovery of Witches (Netflix) – Beginnings Require Endings
The first message I wanted to share came when I finished a show on Netflix, A Discovery of Witches. The show follows a witch, Diana, who starts researching more about the occult for her dissertation. Although she was born and raised around witches, she doesn’t know how to use her powers because her parents were allegedly persecuted for using their powers. We find out through the storyline that her powers were bound by a powerful spell placed on her by her parents when she was a child (another message for another day). Still, she learns how to break the spell and travels back in time to learn to access more of her natural abilities.
While she thought she was just a basic witch with a regular level of power, she discovered she was actually the most powerful witch in millennia. Prophecies from centuries before predicted her arrival. She was chosen to save the population decline of magical species like witches and vampires. Her magic learning lessons required her to access the magic around her and manipulate the energy into a knot. This is where the message begins to unfold itself.
She conquers each knot throughout the seasons, symbolizing a deeper mastery of her magical skill. Each knot is a different spell, and each builds off the previous level’s energy. Towards the end of the series, she surpasses her teacher and ties the final knot, the 10th knot, the knot of endings.
I probably cried watching this scene, and it blessed me so much because I think of the symbolism of the number 10. This is the number of renewed cycles, following the number 9, the number of completions (think 9 months pregnant is full term). Throughout the Bible, we see the significance of the number 10, whether with the 10 Commandments delivered to Moses, the 10 different plagues that were sent to the Pharisees, or even the rule of tithing 10% of your income to the church as a demonstration of one’s devotion to God. Even in tarot, the 10 swords show endings, completions, and the start of a new cycle.
Diana can only create the tenth knot after learning a secret that changes the reality of all magical creatures and humans. This tenth knot ends the previous understanding and social norms that prevailed for over 900 years. Still, it is now replaced with a new experience and ability to recreate the norms in their society.
It reminds me a lot of the world we live in now. We’re on the brink of an ending, and it’s scary. To most Americans, there is no life outside of our modern-day democracy. But the promise of the ending is a new beginning, which we can only accomplish after the world ends as we know it.
2. EVIL (Netflix) – Don’t Be Influenced by Evil
My next example is from another show I watched on Netflix, EVIL. This show follows a trio of demon fighters, a ragtime crew comprised of a newly ordained priest, a relapsed Catholic, and a Muslim turned agnostic. The three are employed by the Catholic Church and respond to different requests for demonic possessions and potential supernatural incidents.
In the show, the main character, Kristen, is being harassed by a demon. Side note: I love how the show portrays demons not only as grotesque anthropomorphic beings but as regular degular people. It reminds me that a demonic presence can look normal and demands your discernment to be aware. Anyway, Kristen and her family are being harassed by this demon in human form named Leland. Leland is a high-ranking demon who influences evil through other lower-level demons and weak-spirited humans.
One of these weak-spirited humans is a man who is on trial for murdering his wife and is ordered a psychological assessment to determine if he’s competent to stand trial. Kristen is the first to evaluate and finds him sane, but Leland does his second opinion and rejects her conclusions. Because of it, the man was acquitted. Long story short, driven by her hatred of Leland and desire to protect her family, Kristen kills the man. This takes her on a downward spiral of identity crisis and damages her relationship with her children, her mother, and even her husband. Her life makes a complete 180 because of her continued engagement with this demonic presence, even if she thought she was combating it. The church’s discernment was so low that they even allowed Leland to serve as a compliance minister (how many churches have demons operating throughout their ministry unknowingly???)
Kristen’s storyline reminds me of Matthew 7:15-23, where Jesus warns us against false prophets and disciples. It’s important to be conscious of not only the words and actions of a person but the outcomes that follow them. As shown in verse 20, “Thus, by their fruit will you recognize them.” Leland was as charismatic and seemingly warmed-natured as the next guy, but what was bore of him? Death, confusion, division, hate, frustration, and the like all came into Kristen’s life from being involved with him. In other words, “A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit.” Kristen allowed a demonic presence in her life and dealt with the repercussions of it.
3. Queen Sugar (Hulu) – Deal With Your History to Heal Your Bloodline
The last message I want to share with y’all came to me while watching a show on Hulu this time. Me and Papa have been wanting to find a show to watch together and he mentioned Queen Sugar. We recently watched a podcast interview of Omar J. Dorsey, one of the show’s prominent cast members. The story follows the Bordelon siblings, who are left to pick up the remnants of their father farms and, consequently, their lives following their father’s untimely death. I love the show as it shows a refreshing narrative of the Black family in America, specifically the South, which modern media seems to have forgotten exists.
In every episode, I found myself relating to a different character, whether Charlie struggling with the delicate balance of mother and boss, Nova faced with the problematic charge of being the black sheep of the family, tasked with liberating the family’s secrets, or Aunt Violet, who is confronted with her new realization that she should’ve dreamed even more significant now that her dreams of being a business owner are coming to life.
Each character undergoes so much personal growth, but the starting point is returning to their roots, the farm. Following a tumultuous few months with my eldest daughter, I’ve been returning to my roots in my life. I began peeling back the layers of myself, my family, and my heritage. I even called my Mema to ask her how she ended up in Jacksonville. And in my discovery, I found so much generational spiritual bondage, y’all. Besides the apparent examples: poverty mindset, teen pregnancy, and unstable relationship patterns, I found even more. I found infidelity, insecurity, and lives left unfulfilled due to ignoring the heart. I also found perseverance, independence, and an entrepreneurial spirit.
To learn more about myself and my daughter, I had to turn around and connect with my ancestors and heritage. And in doing so, I uncovered many wounds needing healing within me.
These are just some of the messages that God has sent me. I’ve been practicing being still and allowing him to speak to me through everything. What is God trying to tell you now?
