Hey family,
We’re back! Let me settle in.

The topic for today’s blog came to mind one night, right before bed. I was doing my index ritual (save that for later), yet the title was cycling through so fast that I had to stop and jot down the outline in my journal.
As you can see from the title, we’re channeling John Singleton’s hood classic, Baby Boy, in this post. Jody’s mama was trying to separate herself from her adult son and find a life of her own. Separate from being mama and grandma. She says the infamous line, “Mama gotta have a life, too.”
Mercury in Leo = Divine Messages in Media
I’ll be taking the quote completely out of context, but first, I want to talk about my natal Mercury placement. I have Mercury in Leo in the 2nd house. I’ve written here about the 2H before because it’s the money house and the house of self-worth, which I’ve also written about. I’m on a journey to activate my 2H and earn the lifestyle I desire- you know, my “Live Live Lavish” era.
With that 2H activation, I had to pay attention to my personal planets there: Venus, Mars, and Mercury. I once watched a TikTok where the creator mentioned that your ancestors may connect with you through media. Last year, I started chronicling all the music I was channeling. I’m up to 200+ songs, and from there I used Claude to analyze the themes that were coming up. It had an entire story arc, child!
But even more recently, in my new song, 28 Barz, I came up with the hook “Like is it hard?” at 6:30am one morning before work. It alludes to a famous quote from Legally Blonde, Elle Woods’s response when her classmates mocked her interest in applying to Harvard Law. It was a play on me applying for the 2027 law admissions cycle. But also to emphasize how easy it was to rap when the words came to me naturally, telepathically lol. Just listen to the song, y’all, then y’all will get it.
In other words, I got powers. I’m Rick James, bitch! I’ve been here before, on my Deja Vu, Teena Marie type beat. But seriously, I’ve been toying with the idea of magic and manifestation for years, and I was right the whole time! I do have superpowers, which is probably why Matilda was my favorite movie as a kid. Movies and music were my channel, my magic wand, and spellbook, if you will. But that channel is at its most open when my passageways are clear.
Magic of Solitude
Back to the title, though: why was I channeling this line? The entire weekend, I just took to myself. It was necessary. My grandfather just passed away. I felt emotionally and physically drained from work, so that weekend I decided I would rest when I wanted. Scrolled as much as I wanted to. Then, all of a sudden, I got a random spurt of energy and found a flow state working on HHH. I updated the cleaning business website, rerouted extra domains, created a hiring post and Calendly link, and set up a Meta ad campaign. All of that took about 2-3 hours.
It’s like Jody’s mama in the garden. She dug up weeds, harvested tomatoes, and rested in the shade sipping wine when she finished. It then brought up the index that I mentioned earlier. Since May, I’ve created a routine of documenting one thing each day that brought me closer to my yearly goals. I use the same template: Today I did __. This is building ___. Tomorrow I will do ___.
Since I’ve started this practice, I noticed my consistency increased from 10% recorded to 30%, then to a personal high of 43% of days documented; then, in August, I didn’t practice my index at all. From a gradual increase in a habit to a sudden fall-off, it prompted me to reevaluate what was going on around me. Then I realized I was someplace other than where I intended to be at the start of the month. My mind, body, and energy were scattered due to the roles and responsibilities of my reality.
Don’t Let Responsibilities Become Distractions
My husband’s family reunion in Tennessee, then summer camp all summer, then school shopping and back-to-school things. And oh yeah, didn’t I tell you guys I started a new job? Exactly. My goal-action-tracking habit was threatened immediately once life put some pressure on it. And besides all that, what was I actually doing in the middle that was actually moving me towards what I wanted? Not what was tasked or assigned to me. I was distracted, yes, but also stretched way too thin with shit that didn’t matter.
That brings me to echoing sentiments of Emma Grede’s new book, Start With Yourself: there is no true work-life balance; you have to take the time you need. I think that verb isn’t saying what I need to say clearly enough.

STEAL YOUR TIME. MAINTAIN IT.
Women Need Time to Create
These, of course, are my words to me. I’m doing this thing because I want to; no one is forcing me to write. And even if no one reads it or comments, I still will write. I’ll work on my business. Become a better entrepreneur. Learn and study the law. Parent my children with love, patience, and wisdom. All on my time. All of the above will happen, not necessarily at the same time, but definitely all at once, cumulatively.
You must make time to be with yourself. Notice I didn’t say work on yourself. Because when I got that spurt of energy to work on my business, I wasn’t doing a lick of work.
I was lying on the couch and scrolling for hours. Food and water were getting delivered to me. In my own vibe, just being. The children went to the park and did their thing. Husband on the grill, doing his thing. Me – the mama, the wife, the glue- was on pause. And that’s when I got the energy to do what has needed to be done for weeks, if not months. It wasn’t pushing through that got the work done; it was the rest and space to just be. Like Ms. Juanita in the garden.

See what I’m explaining, sister, brother, cousin, or third removed, is that you need to sit down somewhere and rest your nerves. Make time to be with yourself. Ain’t nothing wrong with you, and if it is, it’ll be coming together by the end of your rest. Women are divinely connected to the power of creation, but our attention gets diverted through work, family, partnership, etc. Make sure to make the time to get away from the noise and tap into that divinity bank to cash out on your creative being.
You got to have a life too. And with the recent loss of my granddaddy, just a week before his 72nd birthday, I’m reminded that my days of living are limited. Who gets to choose what the remainder will look like?
Until next time,
Cousin Lex
